Digital applications have driven the evolution of CMOS technologies and, generation after generation, scaling has provided benefits in terms of power-performance-area-cost (PPAC). Various innovations have enabled scaling down to the sub-2nm era: advanced lithography with HNA EUV, 3D device architectures with Complementary-FET, advanced interconnect with backside metallization schemes, etc. While primarily developed for logic applications, these technologies will be used for the design of the analog infrastructure present in processors and SoCs, e.g. thermal sensors, clock generation, high-speed I/O. Whether the design of such blocks remains possible in digitally optimized sub-2nm CMOS needs to be assessed. For instance, supply voltage reduction is desirable in the digital context, but this can lead to degradation of the signal-to-noise ratio in the analog domain. Similar type of questions are raised for analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters, which are typically also leveraging advanced CMOS nodes. Novel system partitioning schemes, using analog chiplets, should also be investigated as an alternative.
In this job, you will explore the challenges and opportunities that advanced and future CMOS technologies will bring to analog circuits. You will extend the logic device models to include analog/RF specific elements (gate resistance, matching, noise, crosstalk,...). Based on these models, you will explore the benefits/drawbacks of the devices and technology boosters envisioned to continue the scaling roadmap (fork-sheet FET, complementary FET, 2D materials...). You will design test structures and perform the electrical characterization of the advanced devices processed in imec to evaluate the analog/RF figures-of-merit. You will link technology to analog and mixed-signals circuits design.
