Research & development - Eindhoven | More than two weeks ago

Wireless Systems Engineer

As a wireless systems engineer, you drive the development of next-generation wireless communication & localization sensing solutions.

Imec Netherlands has established a world-leading research and development track record on the design of novel sensors for human health applications and ultra-low-power IoT devices in general. Our team in Eindhoven has a strong track record of innovations in automotive, industrial, wearables, implantable, and medical applications. Imec’s research tracks enable unique opportunities for end-to-end innovations. We create innovative practical solutions used by leading companies worldwide and regularly publish results in leading scientific journals.

In this role, you will be part of the signal processing team at imec Eindhoven. You are responsible for the system design of our next generation wireless SoC. You will have the chance to create algorithms and architectures of wireless communication systems, as well as collaborate with RF/analog, digital HW, SW designers and architects to implement, verify, validate and bring up our SoC. Besides, you will also work on technologies like UWB & Bluetooth, in this position, you have the opportunity to deliver high-quality results while pushing the boundaries of the state-of-the-art.

What you will do

We need you as a Wireless Systems Engineer to be part of our multidisciplinary team to:

  • Design, simulate, and implement wireless communication systems for different applications, e.g., low/high data rate, localization and vital sign detection.
  • Implement radio models for wireless communication and radar systems, and RF/circuit impairments.
  • Implement system models and investigate algorithms for performance enhancements, design and validate them to allow performance sign-off and enable RTL development.
  • Define the control procedures of the physical layer hardware modules to achieve robust and optimal performance of the HW.
  • Bring up, test, characterize and optimize real silicon in lab.
  • Collaborate with other engineering disciplines, such as analog/digital IC designers, and software developers, to understand and define system-level requirements and to realize the system with power and area efficient digital implementations.
  • Take end-to-end responsibility for wireless systems - architecture development, specification, design, evaluation, and demonstration.
  • Develops new and innovative ideas for a modem.
  • Stay up to date to relevant trends and research in the field and wireless standardization.
  • Interact with customers and (academic) partners as a technical interface for existing and new collaborations.

What we do for you

By joining imec on the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven, you will be part of a team of disruptive innovators and thinkers. Imec is pushing the state-of-the-art in the design of ultra-low-power circuits and algorithms to raise the performance and intelligence of sensors, and with the researchers and engineers from our wireless systems group, you will create the next generation platforms for wireless sensing. You will experience a dynamic and stimulating environment working with experts across the technology stack from antennas, mixed-signal integrated circuits, embedded software and advanced algorithms.

Imec The Netherlands, as an employer of choice, offers you an attractive compensation and benefits package including a 100% employer-paid pension plan and flexible working hours. Furthermore, imec-NL offers a wide range of training possibilities. For international candidates, we provide support in the relocation process.

Who you are

  • MSc or Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering.
  • 5+ years of professional experience in designing and simulating the physical layer of wireless communication systems and use it to derive building-block specifications.
  • Strong knowledge of communication theory, filter design and signal processing related algorithms design (such as timing/frequency recovery, signal estimation and detection, automatic gain control, channel estimation, equalization, coding theory, beamforming, etc.).
  • Hands-on experience on lab testing and characterization, such as spectrum analyser, signal generator, signal analyser, etc.
  • Experience in system, modem, and microprocessor architecture, hardware and software control.
  • Experience with system verification: verification plan definition, methodologies, execution and tracking.
  • Knowledge in RF transceiver architectures and trade-offs for wireless communication, localization, and radar applications.
  • Knowledge in existing wireless protocols such as Bluetooth, UWB, and Wi-Fi.
  • Experience with modelling in Python and MATLAB is a must, and C is a plus.
  • Experience and knowledge on High Level Synthesis (HLS) is a plus.
  • Knowledge of FPGA-development is a plus.
  • Team player with good communication skills and the ability to give quality feedback.
  • Hands-on and exploratory attitude, which means taking initiative, thinking pro-actively, having a flexible approach, and solving problems daily are attributes that define yourself.
  • Agile-minded engineer and passionate about new technologies.
  • Your communication skills in English are excellent.
