R&D Team lead Health Research Gelderland

A people manager who enjoys coaching as much as hands-on involvement in research activities

As a R&D Teamleader you manage a part of the Health Research Team in Gelderland, existing of about 8-10 researchers and biomedical engineers. The team together with researchers and engineers of other OnePlanet teams, contributes to the development of innovative sensor solutions and digital twins, specifically targeting gut health and nutrition, that lead to a healthier life. We work both with customers, and in European and national consortia. Besides, we patent the different inventions, publish our results in renowned journals and conferences.  
As a Teamleader you are responsible for people management as well as scientific contribution within your team. We expect that your activities will be equally divided (50%-50%) between the teamleading and scientific part. In this position you will report to the R&D Manager Health Research, who manages 3 teams working from multiple (Wageningen, Eindhoven, Gent) imec locations. This position is based in the Wageningen office. 

What you will do

Teamleading: 

  • Lead, motivate and coach a group of about 8-10 biomedical engineers and researchers. 
  • Oversee the activities, monitor progress and provide support and technical guidance. 
  • Take care of the individual development of team members in growing their technical competences aligned to the team needs while ensuring the continuity of projects 
  • Retain an overview of the technical skills within the team and anticipate on future program needs and translate these into the management and development of resources & competences in the team 
  • Create a true team atmosphere where information is actively shared 
  • Interact with internal customers: identify priorities, defend and implement, being responsible for the appearance of the team  
  • Engage in consultation, collaboration and vision development with the management of the Health Research teams.  
  • Initiate and facilitate interactions with other health research teams within imec to exchange best practices and create synergies. 

Scientific contribution: 

  • Contribute to the research activities by creating building blocks for our platforms related to preventative health in the domains of gut health and nutrition. 
  • In cooperation with customers, partners, and engineers from different disciplines, you combine cutting-edge research results with state-of-the-art components in multi-disciplinary R&D projects from prototyping and exploration to implementation and validation in real-life or clinical studies. 
  • Interact with customers and/or external stakeholders to align on system requirements and periodical progress meetings. 
  • Translate ideas into tangible concepts and execute proof of concept studies.

Who you are

  • You have a solid background in biomedical engineering or similar domain
  • 5-8 years of relevant working experience after Master degree are required  
  • Ability to coach, guide, manage and inspire a team with a mixed experience level.
  • You want to further develop your people management skills
  • You have strong interpersonal skills which allow you to be successful in an international high-tech environment.
  • Flexible in terms of work location. You will be primarily based in Wageningen. Occasionally travel to Eindhoven and Belgium offices may be possible. 
  • You like to engage with both internal and external stakeholders and you do this with a certain flair and a positive attitude.
  • You have a passion for innovations, and you enjoy to have a task in the projects as well.
  • You communicate effectively in English. You can translate your vision into tangible results.
