Radio System Engineer

As a radio system engineer, you drive the development of next-generation wireless communication & localization sensing solutions.

Imec Netherlands has established a world-leading research and development track record on the design of novel sensors for human health applications and ultra-low-power IoT devices in general. Our team in Eindhoven has a strong track record of innovations in automotive, industrial, wearables, implantable, and medical applications. Imec’s research tracks enable unique opportunities for end-to-end innovations. We create innovative practical solutions used by leading companies worldwide and regularly publish results in leading scientific journals.
In this role, you will be part of the wireless sensing team in imec Eindhoven. Your focus will be on the modelling of front-end transceivers (PHY layer) for wireless communication, localization, and radar sensing in collaboration with the Analog/Digital IC team. Besides, you will also work on technologies like UWB & Bluetooth, in this position, you have the opportunity to deliver high-quality results while pushing the boundaries of the state-of-the-art.

What you will do

We need you as a Radio System Engineer to be part of our multidisciplinary team to:

  • Design radio models for wireless communication and radar systems, and RF/circuit impairments.
  • Design methods/algorithms to compensate Analog RF non-idealities/impairments by calibration, pre-equalization and/or pre-distortion technique.
  • Work with radio designers on the architecture, specifications, and design of radio transceivers, and PLLs.
  • Bring up, test, characterize and optimize real silicon in lab.
  • Collaborate with other engineering disciplines, such as analog/digital IC designers, and hardware and software developers, to understand and define system-level requirements.
  • Take end-to-end responsibility for wireless systems - architecture development, specification, design, evaluation, and demonstration.
  • Stay up to date to relevant trends and research in the field and wireless standardization.
  • Interact with customers and (academic) partners as a technical interface for existing and new collaborations.

What we do for you

By joining imec on the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven, you will be part of a team of disruptive innovators and thinkers. Imec is pushing the state-of-the-art in the design of ultra-low-power circuits and algorithms to raise the performance and intelligence of sensors, and with the researchers and engineers from our wireless systems group, you will create the next generation platforms for wireless sensing. You will experience a dynamic and stimulating environment working with experts across the technology stack from antennas, mixed-signal integrated circuits, embedded software and advanced algorithms.

Imec The Netherlands, as an employer of choice, offers you an attractive compensation and benefits package including a 100% employer-paid pension plan and flexible working hours. Furthermore, imec-NL offers a wide range of training possibilities. For international candidates, we provide support in the relocation process.

Who you are

  • MSc or Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering.
  • 3+ years of professional experience in developing a behavioural model of an Analog Front End and use it to derive building-block specifications.
  • Strong knowledge of RF and Analog components/modules composited of wireless communication systems, the possible impairments from those components, and the corresponding calibration and impairment reduction methods/algorithms.
  • Strong knowledge of communication theory, filter design and signal processing related algorithms design.
  • Knowledge in RF transceiver architectures and trade-offs for wireless communication, localization, and radar applications.
  • Knowledge in existing wireless protocols such as Bluetooth, UWB, and Wi-Fi.
  • Experience with modelling in Python and Matlab is a must, and in myHDL and C is a plus.
  • Hands-on experience on lab testing and characterization, such as spectrum analyser, signal generator, signal analyser, etc.
  • Team player with good communication skills and the ability to give quality feedback.
  • Hands-on and exploratory attitude, which means taking initiative, thinking pro-actively, having a flexible approach, and solving problems daily are attributes that define yourself.
  • Agile-minded engineer and passionate about new technologies.
  • Your communication skills in English are excellent.
