Shaping Light: Pioneering Flat Optics for Tomorrow's Technology

The topic

The field of optics is undergoing a transformative shift with the advent of flat optics. Nanoscale patterning of dielectric and metallic optical metasurfaces has enabled the creation of compact optical systems that leverage large-scale semiconductor manufacturing techniques. This groundbreaking approach has paved the way for novel optical devices, including colour splitters, optical encryption devices, and computational imaging tools. These developments highlight the boundless potential of flat optics in revolutionizing optical technologies.

At imec, we are at the forefront of translating these scientific innovations from laboratory research into industrial applications. However, significant challenges remain in pushing these flat optic technologies towards widespread commercial adoption.

This PhD project will focus on the design and development of advanced flat optic devices with specific applications in beam shaping and sensing. While the precise application remains flexible, the overarching aim is to create an innovative, industry-relevant flat optical sensor or beam shaping device. Special attention will be given to flat optic retroreflective devices, which hold immense promise in diverse fields ranging from optical communication for space applications to cutting-edge surgical technologies.

As a PhD candidate, you will be responsible for driving the entire development process of the target device, from concept to lab demonstration. This includes defining the technical requirements, designing and modelling the device, and finally, realizing a functional lab prototype. Your work will play a crucial role in overcoming existing technological barriers and advancing flat optics toward real-world applications.

The candidate

You are a driven student, with a background in engineering, physics, electrical engineering, or equivalent. You are passionate about flat optics and its applications, and you like to share your scientific insights with your excellent communication skills. Given the international character of imec, an excellent knowledge of English is a must.
