Implantable flexible electro-active sensing platform for smart intraocular applications
Glaucoma is an age-related multifactorial and progressive disease of the optic nerve, leading to loss of visual function. Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) observed in most glaucoma patients, is the only risk factor that can be clinically modified, and it needs to be monitored constantly. The scope of the EU-funded GRAVITEYE project is to advance existing methods of IOP monitoring to ensure intraocular homeostasis. Researchers propose to develop a smart intraocular implant in the form of an intraocular lens that employs specialised sensors to monitor IOP and fluid dynamics inside the eye. The device will help understand the triggers of glaucoma and identify biomarkers for prompt disease diagnosis and prevention.
