Lex Oosterveld, OnePlanet Research Center, Principal Member of Technical Staff will give a presentation on Integrated photonics applications for the Agrifood industry

Spectroscopic and other photonic technologies are widely used for off-line measurement of the chemical composition and physical properties of crops and food products. However, broader adoption is limited by the cost and size of traditional equipment. Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) enable the development of compact, cost-effective, energy-efficient, and highly reliable sensing systems. These advancements open new possibilities for monitoring plant growth, moisture levels, nutrients, ripeness, defects, and contamination, as well as for real-time process control through in-line measurement of product composition in food processing. To drive successful implementation, it is crucial to align sensor development with industry requirements and translate these into technical specifications. This session will explore how integrated photonics can transform the agrifood sector, improving efficiency, sustainability, and product quality.
